A recent paper in Science found that North American avifauna have decreased by 29% since 1970. That’s a staggering 3 billion fewer birds, and the study found that species we view as ubiquitous have been hit the hardest with some species losing more than 50 million individuals.

Dr. Kristen Ruegg was recently featured in an article in The Atlantic, “The Quiet Disappearance of Birds in North America,” focused on the Science study. She also discussed the matter with NPR’s All Things Considered.
